Remembering The Indian Sitcom, Shriman Shrimati

 

Shriman Shrimati was a popular Indian film released in 1982. It was directed by Vijay Reddy and had a big star cast of Deepti Naval, Sarika, Rakesh Roshan, Amol Palekar, A. K. Hangal, Sanjeev Kumar, Rakhee, and Lalita Pawar. The movie is a unique love story about people from different social classes. It was based on the 1979 Telugu language film Tayaramma Bangarayya.

                                                    

Like any other ‘80sBollywood masala movie, this one is also filled with drama and melodrama. But in its core lies a beautiful “opposites attract” love story that is enjoyed even today.

Stories are like that only – if told well, they touch people. Shriman Shrimati tells the story of three couples. The one with Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhee playing Mr. Shankar Lal and Mrs. Parvati Lal is the divine one. They hardly argue and have dedicated their lives to the service of those in problems. This couple set out on their journey to improve the love story of the other two couples.

                                                 

 

Sarika and Deepti Naval playing Aruna and Veena are best friends but are poles apart. Veena is the perfect bride material who knows all the household works and is very submissive. On the other hand, Aruna is an outgoing person who loves to dress up in the best designer clothes, live a polished life, and trot the world outside. Therefore, look wise too, they are given a rural and urban shade. Veena wears sarees while Aruna wears frocks, jeans, crop tops, etc.

One fine day, Aruna tells Veena to wear each other’s attire and get clicked. Little did she know that these would be the same photographs that will go to the local matchmaker’s pocket and end up in a marriage filled with confusion. So, Aruna in a saree gets selected by a simple and middle-class household of Madhu Gupta who wants a girl like Veena. And the supremely rich and elite household of Rajesh selects Veena as she looks modern in the photograph.

Problems arise very soon in their marriage. Rajesh was of the impression that Veena drinks, smokes, wears modern dresses, and dances at parties. But Veena is just the opposite who knows only her home. Veena’s mother-in-law played by Lalita Pawar torments her with heaps of household work.

Aruna is the spoilt daughter of a rich dad and she wants her life to be as happening as before. She spends her dad’s money to renovate this middle-class household of Madhu. Aruna doesn’t even cook for the family as she is very busy juggling the duties of being the President of multiple clubs.

As a blessing, Shankar and Parvati come into the lives of these two couples and change them. In the story of Veena and Rajesh, they make Veena learn how to be outgoing, how to mingle at parties, how to talk at parties, etc. In the story of Aruna and Madu, they make Aruna realize the importance of family and how shallow her friends are who use her only for her dad’s money.

In the end, Shankar and Parvati also reveal their tragic story that will wet your eyes. Shriman Shrimati is a true family entertainer that you simply cannot miss. From drama to comedy – you will find everything here.
