Women’s Day: Lessons From 5 Powerful Female Bollywood Characters

 


As the world becomes more connected, we see a greater diversity of outlooks, cultures, and beliefs. This is reflected in the characters we see on screen and the roles women play in movies today. Over the past decade, female characters have become more important than ever before, bringing some unforgettable stories and voices to the screen. From all walks of life, many female characters have changed society with their outlook, strength, and passion.

 

As part of International Women's Day celebrations, here are some of the most memorable female characters of Bollywood movies.

 

  1. Sushmita Sen as Aarya in 'Aarya'

 

The Hotstar Specials series, led by Sushmita Sen, follows the journey of an independent mother returning to India. A devoted mother, she is focused on returning to India and facing her family and enemies. In the show, we see Aarya's journey from a mafia queen ruling her family's illegal drug empire.

  1. Sridevi as Shashi in 'English Vinglish'

 

 Gauri Shinde's English Vinglish (2012) starring Sridevi as Shashi, a woman humiliated by her lack of fluency in English despite living in a cosmopolitan city. Although the film celebrates Shashi's strength and resilience, it is her speech during her niece's wedding that is one of the highlights of the movie. 'Unless you help yourself, nobody can help save you,' says Shashi.   1. Vidya Balan as Vidya Bagchi in 'Kahaani'

 

The film Kahaani, featuring a pregnant woman in search of her lost husband in the city of Calcutta, was directed by Sujoy Ghosh; it starred Vidya Balan. She gave an astonishing performance as a woman who was forced to confront authoritative figures. In the film's unforgettable climax, Vidya Bagchi lent a triumphant punch to the plot. Many considered her performance to be one of the best in Indian cinema.

  1. Deepika Padukone as Piku in 'Piku'

 

Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Irrfan Khan’s, Piku ostensibly revolve around constipation. However, the story is also about a father-daughter relationship, old age, and more. Bhashkor Banerjee is dependent on his daughter Piku. This can be annoying at times, but Piku understands this and accepts it all too well. After her father's passing, she tells Rana that after an age, parents need their children's support for the mere act of being alive. It is your responsibility to look after aging guardians.

  1. Rani Mukerji as Shivani Shivaji Roy in 'Mardaani' series

 

Proving to be a true torchbearer for women's empowerment, Rani Mukerji's lead character in both films has broken the shackles of an oppressive society to bring justice to the victims of crime and punish those who threaten the social order. In 2014, Rani Mukerji starred in 'Mardaani', which saw her play a female cop battling against a child-trafficking criminal. The film's sequel came five years later and saw Mukerji's character hunt down a serial rapist. Both films were lauded for featuring a strong lead character who was a torchbearer for women's empowerment.
